Reflections on the Mindfulness of the Breath/Body (Satipatthana Sutta)

Handout from Dharma Talk on November 16, 2011:

  1. Experiment with reading all or parts of  the Sattipatthana Sutta. You might find it helpful to first spend some time in meditation and then do the reading. Feel free to read it out loud, slowly, mindfully and even repeat a section two and three times.

  2. Practice mindfulness of breath as described in the sutta; consider practicing every day, 6 days per week for at least 15 minutes; gradually increase the time.

    Finding a quiet place; sitting with the body erect; following the breath where you feel it most clearly in the body; breathing in know that you are breathing in; breathing out know that you are breathing out;Breathing in long/short know that you are breathing in long/short; breathing out long/short know that you are breathing out long/short;

    Breathing in experiencing the whole physical body or the whole body of the breath; breathing out experiencing the whole physical body or the whole body of the breath;

    Breathing in calming the whole physical body or the whole body of the breath; breathing out calming the whole physical body or the whole body of the breath.
